Black-owned Art Gallery: Richard Beavers Gallery
Artwork from Wonder World Exhibit by Frank Morrison
New York City is well known for its Art Galleries and Art Exhibits, however there a very few spaces that focus primarily on Black Art, Black Artists, and the Black Experience. As big fans of all things related to Black Art, we were ecstatic when we learned about Richard Beavers Art Gallery. With two locations, one in SoHo (Manhattan) and the other in BedStuy (Brooklyn), this Black-owned art gallery is free to the public and features exhibits by Black Artists.
During our visit to the Brooklyn Gallery, we learned about the intention the owner had behind opening the Brooklyn location. He grew up in the neighborhood but always had to travel outside of his community to see art. He opened up the BedStuy location to create a space where art is easily accessible to the Black people living in the neighborhood. In addition to exhibits, this location hosts events for the community like toy drives, Family Portrait Day and Kids’ Art Workshops.
We had the chance to experience the Wonder World Exhibit by Frank Morrison. The exhibit was recently extended and is now running until January 24, 2024. Frank Morrison’s work is absolutely amazing and this exhibit was very nostalgic and captivating. We loved that the art moved beyond the canvas and onto the walls as images of Black children playing filled the space. There is also audio that accompanies the tour to give you some insight into Frank’s upbringing.
We highly recommend stopping by and checking out this exhibit. If you want to make it an adventure, then we recommend grabbing a bite or drink at one of these Black-owned businesses nearby.
